What is gene ontology?
"Ontologies" are used to describe the functions of a gene. The three main domains covered by these ontologies are:
Below I have listed all the ontologies found associated with COL5A1 through the QUICKGO database.
- Biological process: what mechanism it is a part of that is important for the continued functioning of the cell, tissue, or organism.
- Cellular component: the location of the protein inside the cell
- Molecular function: the activities of the the protein
Below I have listed all the ontologies found associated with COL5A1 through the QUICKGO database.
Biological process of COL5A1 product
AnalysisIt is well known that the gene product of COL5A1 forms type V collagen which interacts with many other different collagens to form fibrils. These fibrils can form ligaments and muscles, which explains how the gene can affect flexibility.
|
Cellular component of COL5A1 product
AnalysisMost collagen structures are triple helices, so it makes sense that the cellular component of the pro-alpha 1(V) chain is a trimer.
|
Molecular function of COL5A1 product
AnalysisThe protein forms type V collagen, which interacts with other collagen to form tissues that provide structure to different cells and tissues. That it provides extra-cellular support is to be expected.
